Due to the overwhelming response by research specialists around the world in 1999 (Birmingham, England), 2001 (Munich, Germany), 2003 (Osaka, Japan), 2005 (Cairo, Egypt) and 2007 (Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL), the International Association of Judo Researchers is pleased to announce the 6th International Science of Judo Symposium. The World Research Symposium will be held prior to the 2009 World Judo Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on Tuesday, 25 August 2009.
The World Research Symposium will include research symposia, oral presentations, and poster presentations of research. This document is the first call for programs for the 2009 World Research Symposium.

Dennis van der Geest says goodbye to judo.
The 33-year-old judoka, who became heavyweight world champion in 2005, at a press conference announced that he was missing the motivation to proceed. At the Olympics in Beijing Van der Geest in his fight against Tamerlan Tmenov caught a serious arm injury. Since then he is no longer in action. Next weekend, he would make his comeback in Tunisia, but he is now off.
Van der Geest wanted to stop after the World Championship in August in Rotterdam, but after the silver medal of competitor Grim Vuijsters at the European Championship qualification is little more feasible for the judoka who won bronze at the Olympics in 2004 and ten national and two European titles conquered.
"Physically I was still on"
... Van der Geest said: "My feeling is that I still could win a medal at the World Championship. Rationally, I know that the deep motivation for everything to do not longer is present.

Anton Geesink 75 Years
Dutch Judo legend Anton Geesink celebrates today his 75th birthday.
In Utrecht, the place he is born, this was celebrated by a special exhibition with a sand sculpture of the famous "hold", showing his victory on Kaminaga in 1964.

Uchishiba wins consecutive national titles
Olympic champ Uchishiba wins consecutive national titles (April 4 2009)
Two-time Olympic champion Masato Uchishiba beat Tatsuaki Egusa in the men's 66-kilogram final to win his second consecutive title on the first day of action at the national weight-class invitational championships on Saturday.
Uchishiba, who captured back-to-back titles in the same weight category in Beijing last summer, claimed his fifth overall championship crown at the tournament, which doubles as the final selection meet for this summer's world championships in Rotterdam.
Hiroaki Hiraoka took the men's 60-kg crown for the second year running at Fukuoka Kokusai Center.
Ayumi Tanimoto, who also successfully defended her title at 63 kg in Beijing but is struggling with a dislocated knee, lost on points to rival Yoshie Ueno in the women's final. Ueno won her second straight title and fifth overall.
Maki Tsukada, silver medallist in Beijing, was the other big-name casualty as she was pinned by Mika Sugimoto in the women's over-78 kg final and had her bid for a seventh straight title crushed in her first official tournament since last summer.
Ryoko Tani, who missed out on her bid for a third consecutive gold and took the bronze in Beijing at 48 kg, is not competing as she is pregnant with her second child.
Up-and-coming judoka rivals Emi Yamagishi and Tomoko Fukumi are likely to vie for the ticket to Rotterdam.

Neil Adams New coach Flemish Judo
The English top coach Neil Adams links himself to the Olympic Games 2012 as a top coach to the Flemish judo.
He has developed an excellent career as top athlete and as top coach.
Adams became world champion in 1981, became seven times European champion and became two times vice-Olympic champion.
As a coach he has conducted the British team to the game at Atlanta 1996 and was he until now active as national coach of Wales.

Two-time Olympic champion Ueno retires
Japanese judoka Masae Ueno, the women's 70-kilogram gold medalist at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, announced her retirement from competition Monday.
Ueno, 30, also a two-time world champion, said she lost motivation to continue her career after winning her second straight Olympic gold in Beijing last August, although she did not rule out the possibility of making a temporary comeback in the future
I thought about competing in the national championship (next April) for my next goal, but I couldn't recover the vigor I lost after the Olympics, Ueno said. I just want to take a rest from being on top and I think I'd be able to come back if I want to in a few years.

The IJF is introducing a World Ranking List (WRL) in order to identify the leading athletes in each Olympic weight category. It will be used for seeding purposes as well as for Olympic Games Qualification
The World Ranking List will consist of points from the World Cups, Grand Prix, Grand Slam, Masters, Continental Championships, World Championships and Olympic Games:
The Ranking:
The total of ranking points for each player will amount to the sum of his/her five highest point scoresU during each 12 month period:
- look back 12 months from today - five best results count 100%
- look back 13-24 months, from there - five best results count 75%
- look back 25-36 months, from there - five best results count 50%
- look back 37-48 months, from there - five best results count 25%
Additional Rules:
In case of equality of total points, the higher ranking will be decided by:
- The highest sum of the current points from all World Championships.
- The highest current points from one single event, then, if needed, the second highest, and so on
- If the competitors are still equal the decision will be taken by the IJF Executive Committee in case of Olympic Qualification.

The International Judo Federation has greenlighted the launch of a world ranking system that will also determine qualifying for the Olympic Games, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun.
Based on points won from the world championship and a new Grand Prix series that will kick off in January 2009, the IJF will award an Olympic berth to the top 20 of each weight class.
The decision was made at a board meeting in Bangkok on Sunday, and details will be finalized at the IJF extraordinary congress on Tuesday.
The Grand Prix series will be made up of world judo's major tournaments such as the Paris international in February and the Kano Cup at Tokyo in December. The IJF will grade the events on a scale of four to determine the point value of each tournament.
Points from the Grand Prix, combined with the results from the world championships, will determine the rank of each judoka.
The top 20 wrestlers of each weight category--but only one from any single country--automatically qualify for the Olympics.
The IJF also made a rule change Sunday, deciding to scrap the koka point from the judging.
Without koka, the federation anticipates a rise in the number of bouts ending in extra time on the golden point rule. As a countermeasure to the expected increase, the IJF slashed the length of extra time from five minutes to three.
The slew of changes arrives under the gaze of IJF president Marius Vizer, who is seeking to further commercialize the sport.
Beginning with the next election five years away, the IJF president will be allowed to nominate a majority of the board, which would strengthen Vizer's grip on world judo.
